Japan will launch baseball lottery

The sports lottery in Japan is limited to a football product launched by the Japanese sports council. Last year, the sales of the football lottery amounted to about 112 billion yen ($1 billion).

The lottery sales in Japan have been falling every year since 2005 and the government is doing everything possible to change this trend and increase the profitability of this industry.

This week representatives of the country’s 12 professional baseball teams agreed to consider adding the sport to the Sports Promotion Lottery. None of the 12 pro baseball teams reportedly offered serious objections to the lottery proposal. The government must still seek the approval of baseball players and umpires, but the expectation is that the new lottery could be up and running by next year.

The lottery may start as early as 2019, according to the sources.
