The parliament of Armenia enacted a series of revisions to the legislation on advertising in the second and final reading by a vote of 63 to 23 abstentions, restricting the promotion of gambling by casinos, lotteries, bookies, and other organizations that give the option to place bets. The advertising ban also guarantees that the sector operates on a level playing field.
Only four-star and higher hotels, border checkpoints, and the fronts of buildings that provide gaming are allowed to advertise gambling. It is against the law to advertise in other areas. Advertising corporations have criticized the move, claiming that online gambling games account for 60-70 percent of their revenue. Other estimates, however, reveal that this proportion is merely 20-25 percent, according to the government.
The government in Armenia insists that the measures are being driven by the fact that an increasing number of individuals, particularly young people, are becoming hooked to gambling. It claims that the amount of bets placed in 2020 would be six times more than in 2018.
Τhe leader of the parliamentary committee on economic matters, Babken Tunyan during prior deliberations in parliament on the proposed amendments, stated that the country had made 3.2 trillion dram worth of bets from January to November 2021. He said that the government’s income last year totaled around 1.6 trillion drams as a point of reference.
