The Betting and Gaming Council which represents betting shops, online gaming businesses and casinos, issued a warning over the UK government’s new proposed immigration laws and that they may have a severe impact on the gambling industry with negative consequences for tourism and gambling establishments.
The council, which represents approximately 90 percent of the UK betting and gaming industry, and according to its estimations gambling currently contributes around £3 billion to HM Treasury stated:
“The Government has announced exemptions for certain workers and skills and we urge the Government to work with the casino and wider hospitality industry to ensure we can continue to thrive. To remain competitive, our casinos need the best croupiers with great arithmetic agility. Using arbitrary skills or salary requirements will damage highly successful parts of the UK economy.”
The UK government following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union is proposing a number of law changes and legislation that will impact both immigration and the economy. Chief executive officer of The Betting and Gaming Council Michael Dugher commented: “Casinos are a hugely important part of our country’s leisure industry attracting thousands of wealthy tourists to the UK from around the world. While we are determined to grow the number of UK croupiers through the NVQ in gaming operations available at many colleges and through the world-class Nottingham Casino Academy, we need the ability to employ the best from around the world.”
