Hungarian iGaming regulator, the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (SZTFH) will, in cooperation with the banks, block bank accounts related to illegal gambling, i.e. limiting deposits and withdrawals related to unlicensed gambling sites, from July 2023. From the same date, Hungarian banks will also refuse bank card payments to illegal gambling sites.
The SZTFH, which oversees the gambling sector, has a priority goal in the online space as well, protecting players. To this end, the SZTFH Authority continuously checks illegal online gambling and, based on the checks, imposes fines and will block the relevant websites.
The SZTFH also draws attention to the dangers of illegal online gambling in connection with the blocking of payment transactions. In addition to the fact that such sites did not submit themselves to the strict Hungarian regulations protecting minors and vulnerable groups, they also do not ensure the protection of players’ personal and banking data. The SZTFH emphasizes that, following the restrictions, the payment of prizes won on unlicensed sites will also become uncertain.
The Authority recommends that players find out on the website of the SZTFH whether the given website is licensed, as this is the only way to ensure that the player gets access to his winnings and that his personal and bank data are not misused.
