According to UK’s Sunday newspapers “The Observer” and the “Sunday Times” the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) will propose banning the use of credit cards in online gambling. This proposal is coming after consulting on credit wagering. UKGC is expected to publish its report and recommendations this week.
This is the latest move to prevent the exploitation of vulnerable customers according to the iGaming industry watchdog. The proposal comes almost two years after charity groups as GambleAware and Citizens Advice asked the government to protect people from sliding into gambling addiction.
After a year of consultation by Secretary of State for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) the Commission reviewed the regulatory structures and industry safeguards attached to monitoring credit-based wagering.
The full ban on credit cards used for online gambling is expected to be unveiled by the regulator and iGaming players will be able to use only their debit cards in order to prevent themselves from overextending. According to the press reports UKGC proposal will probably include e-wallets in the ban!
Another proposal from the Commission is to make GamStop membership a condition for online operators to be licenced to operate. GamStop is the organization which allows people to block themselves from gambling addiction by allowing their details to be shared among operators in order to block them from opening accounts elsewhere.
