Ukraine blocks 59 international providers

Although Ukrainian efforts to regulate online market remain foggy, a court in the country ordered Ukraine’s internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to 59 international licensed gambling websites.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) material it provided had led to the court ordering. The SSU said it would continue to  “take all necessary measures to bring to justice those who violate law…on the prohibition of gambling”, while it declined to specify the identities of these 59 online rapscallions, but did say they included the “20 most popular platforms among Ukrainian gamblers.”

Also, Ukraine’s ever-busy Cyber Police arrested a 46-year-old man in Odessa for running three unauthorized online casinos that catered to over 20k users in Ukraine and Russia. The accused man seemed to also operate a payment network generating earnings over UAH1m (US$37,500) per month.

Online gambling remains illegal in Ukraine, though the country’s legislature in January approved a bill to legalise gambling in its first reading, with 260 of the country’s 450 deputies voting in favour.
