Spain to classify problem gambling as mental disorder

Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), the Spain gambling regulator, has decided to consider problem gambling as a mental disorder.

The new measures are included in 2019-20 Responsible Gaming Program, which was recently approved by members of the Responsible Gaming Advisory Council (CAJR). They will be rolled out over the coming months as the DGOJ continues with its efforts to promote responsible gambling in Spain.

The first measure involves reclassifying gambling addiction as a mental health problem. The DGOJ and CAJR will put together a list of key variables that will help to identify someone as a problem gambler, as well as the number of people being treated for such issues.

The DGOJ stated that once the number of people facing compulsive gambling issues is identified, it will be easier to tailor policies to address the growing menace of gambling addiction and also assess its social impact.

Spanish regulator will also try to establish an alert system that notifies against potential ID fraud upon signing up to gamble with an operator. The DGOJ has already provided its licensed operators with a ‘player verification system’ for identifying players. But, the regulator explained that in order to tackle the issue head-on, they’d need more “value-added services.”

The proposed alert service will flag up to a player when someone has attempted to register with an operator using their personal details when they have already signed up themselves.
