The creation of an Austria Gambling Regulator is officially delayed. Casinos Austria AG (CASAG) announced that the independent authority will not meet its original 2026 deadline.
A new licensing framework will take priority over the regulator’s launch. Sources indicate implementation will require an additional 6-12 months beyond initial projections.
Current Oversight Stays in Place
The Federal Ministry of Finance will continue regulating the market for now. This arrangement extends until the new watchdog body becomes operational sometime in 2027.
Jan Krainer, a member of the Austrian National Council, revealed that technical preparations are complete. Legislators have approved IP blocking tools to combat illegal operators. The full bill text, however, is still under wraps.
Duopoly Structure Under Pressure
Austria’s gambling sector operates as a duopoly. CASAG runs all land-based casinos. The company combines 33% state ownership with majority control by Czech giant Allwyn. Online gambling belongs entirely to Austrian Lotteries and its Win2Day brand.
Time is running out for this structure. Win2Day’s concession expires in 2027. CASAG’s license follows soon after. These looming deadlines force rapid legislative action.
March Deadline Critical
Lawmakers face a hard deadline. The bill needs finalization by March 31. This window allows mandatory review by Brussels officials. Any delay beyond March endangers the entire reform schedule.
The industry awaits definitive rules. An independent Austria Gambling Regulator promises clearer oversight. For now, operators must prepare for a longer period of uncertainty.
