Alberta’s new open iGaming market is set to launch on July 13, and the regulator, Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), has announced that 28 operators have already registered or begun the registration process. The list includes major industry players such as DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet Canada, BetRivers, theScore Bet, Jackpot City, Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune, Bet99, Betway, Betty, BetMGM, Bally’s, Golden Nugget, and Caesars.
The AGLC will update the list of registered operators weekly. Alongside the operators, the regulator has also registered 22 iGaming systems providers, 8 platform providers, and 11 goods and services suppliers. This setup is modeled after Ontario’s regulatory framework, which has been operational for four years and currently supports 45 licensed operators and 79 live gaming websites.
Alberta’s new iGaming market will operate with a 20% house cut on net iGaming revenue, with 80% of revenue going to operators. Additionally, 2% of total gross gaming revenue (GGR) will be allocated to First Nations, and 1% of total GGR will fund social responsibility initiatives.
Greg Karamitis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports at DraftKings, previously stated, “We’re excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings’ footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta. With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup—hosted right here in North America—it’s a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.”
The AGLC has advised that they are experiencing a high volume of inquiries and will prioritize organizations that have initiated the registration process and paid the required fees.
