Advertising of online casino services and gambling products will no longer be broadcast across Belgian TV networks starting on this Saturday (June 1). Changes were approved in November of last year, and are part of the effort to protect children from the ill-effects of all forms of gambling.
The measure was formed by Minister of Justice Koen Greens who in June 2017 presented ‘gambling protection mandate’, seeking to toughen up Belgian’s national gambling laws protecting consumers and vulnerable audiences. The new regulations were accepted by the Belgian parliament after close to a year of deliberations.
The ban on advertising of betting services during sports broadcasts will be enforced by the Belgium Gaming Commission (BGC). Operators will only be allowed to advertise via sites licensed by the BGC, or via personalised advertising, which uses user behaviour and interest data to target players. They will also be prohibited from using celebrities or athletes to promote their sites.
The Belgian government also demands that licensed operators register all players through its ‘itsme’ verification app. The app is supported by all major Belgian banks and telecom providers, enabling customers to identify themselves via a unique 5-digit numerical code or fingerprint.
