South Africa is facing a gambling crisis, with 42% of workers resorting to betting to cover expenses and debt, according to the latest Old Mutual 2026 Savings and Investments Monitor. The report, which surveyed individuals aged 18 to 65 earning at least R8,000 (US$484) monthly, reveals alarming trends in financial behavior among South Africans.
“Of concern is that 42% of working South Africans acknowledge they gamble frequently hoping to make money that can cover some of their expenses and debt,” the report states. The data shows that lower-income earners, particularly those making between R8,000 and R15,000 monthly, are most affected, with 52% gambling to address financial hardship. Younger adults aged 18 to 29 are even more likely to bet to pay bills, with 58% participation in this group.
The financial consequences of gambling are severe: 22% of respondents now struggle to cover monthly expenses due to their betting habits, up from 12% in 2025. When asked if gambling has caused financial difficulty, 41% answered “Yes,” and 16% said “Yes, often.”
Sports betting is the most popular form of gambling, with 63% of gamblers wagering on sports. Casino slots follow at 46%, the lottery at 42%, and casino table games at 26%. Horse wagering is the least common, with only 11% participation. The frequency of gambling is high, with 10% betting daily, 32% gambling two to three times a week, and 23% playing once a week.
Overall gambling participation in South Africa remains steady at 53%, though engagement varies by income level. Those earning between R15,000 and R29,999 have a 58% participation rate, while those earning over R60,000 have a 48% rate.
South Africa’s gambling industry, which includes land-based casinos, iGaming, sports betting, and the national lottery, has historically been a key revenue source for the government. However, the growing reliance on gambling to cover basic expenses underscores the need for greater awareness and support for those struggling with problem gambling.
