Fanatics is set to launch a massive advertising offensive in 2027, planning to spend up to $1 billion on sports betting marketing—a more than twofold increase from its current $350 million budget. This bold move signals the company’s intent to break the stranglehold that DraftKings and FanDuel have maintained over the U.S. online sports wagering market.
According to Michael Rubin, CEO of Fanatics, the company is on track to generate $14 billion in total sales this year, with $2 billion coming from its betting and gaming operations. Currently, Fanatics holds a 10% market share in U.S. sports wagering, a significant achievement given its relatively recent entry into the space in 2023. With operations now live in 19 states, the company is leveraging its financial strength—including $2 billion in projected free cash flow and $1 billion in net cash this year—to fuel its expansion.
Fanatics stands out due to its financial flexibility. As a privately held company, it avoids the quarterly earnings pressures that have constrained its publicly traded rivals. This allows Fanatics to allocate resources more aggressively toward sports betting, potentially accelerating its growth without the same level of market scrutiny. The company’s valuation of $31 billion further underscores its financial might, placing it among the most valuable privately held firms globally.
In addition to its sports betting ambitions, Fanatics is also making strides in prediction markets. The company recently acquired a regulated exchange and clearinghouse, enabling it to vertically integrate its yes/no exchange platform. Rubin has indicated that regulatory changes are on the horizon, particularly concerning prediction markets. While specifics remain unclear, industry observers anticipate that a Supreme Court ruling on a related case could provide critical legal clarity for operators in this emerging sector.
With its aggressive marketing plans and strategic acquisitions, Fanatics is positioning itself as a formidable challenger to the established duopoly. The company’s ability to deploy substantial capital without the constraints of public markets could prove decisive in reshaping the competitive landscape of U.S. sports betting.
