Germany’s government is trying to ensure that children won’t be able to contact with incentives to buy loot boxes or other in-game items and this way the Bundestag, the federal parliament, reformed the Youth Protection Act. According to Spiegel magazine, an amendment passed ensuring that every game or other application that features loot boxes or similar in-game offerings will likely be classified with an age rating of 18 or even older!
The reform won’t affect just future game releases but also games that are already in the market classified as harmless, such as EA Sports FIFA 21 which currently approved by the Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body without any age restriction.
FIFA game is on the spotlight since the popular mode named “Ultimate Team” was introduced. This features in-game purchases in the form of card sets. According to the new reform it could soon get slapped with an 18+ rating, which would certainly be a major problem for EA. If any publisher wants to receive a lower age limit for their game, they should disable by default any loot boxes or any other in-game purchases!
