Ladbrokes owner calls for ban on gambling adverts

Global sports betting and gaming group GVC Holdings, the owner of Ladbrokes and Coral, has called for an end to all UK sports-betting broadcast advertising on live and repeated sporting events, with the exception of horse racing.

GVC Holdings has outlined a series of proposals to protect problem gamblers, including an end to football shirt sponsorship. Ladbrokes and Coral already confirmed they will cancel all their shirt sponsorship deals and stop advertise on pitch-side boards to allow football fans to watch matches without an incentive to bet.

In October 2018, the operator was the first to publicise its support for a pre-watershed, whistle-to-whistle advertising ban which is set to be introduced at the start of the 2019-20 football season in August. Ban outlines that no betting adverts will now be shown during live sports coverage before 21:00 in the UK from five minutes before the event begins until five minutes after it finishes,

However, the company believes now that restrictions do not go far enough. “Whilst the vast majority of our customers enjoy our products responsibly, it is high time that the industry did more to protect its customers from potential harm.” GVC chief executive Kenny Alexander explained.

GVC also pledged to funnel 1% of gambling revenue into research, treatment projects and education by 2022, up from the current 0.1%.
