New Hampshire legalizes sports betting

New Hampshire has become the 16th US and second New England state to legalize sports betting after Governor Chris Sununu signed House Bill 480 into law.

Governor Chris Sununu signed a bill which permits players in New Hampshire over the age of 18 to engage in sports betting at up to ten retail locations and via five mobile sportsbooks, with the sports betting operators to be selected to act as agents of the New Hampshire Lottery Commission through a competitive procurement process.

New Hampshire is the second state in the New England region to legalize gambling on sporting events after Rhode Island, which saw its two casinos – Twin River Lincoln and Twin River Tiverton – go live with wagering in late 2018.

New Hampshire has no casinos or racetracks within its borders, but the combination of retail locations and mobile offering should help New Hampshire to drive in revenue from other states. All three states bordering New Hampshire are currently without legal sports betting. There are less than 1.4 million in people in New Hampshire, but Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont have combined 8.4 million people.

Wagering in the state is projected to direct $7.5 million toward the state’s education trust in the fiscal year 2021 and $13.5 million in 2023. Despite some lawmakers in the state hoping that sports betting could launch in early 2020, it appears a more reasonable launch date won’t be until June or July 2020
