Sweden has announced a major update to its betting laws with the approval of a strict new ban on gambling with credit. The updated Gambling Act of 2018 will take full effect on May 1, 2026, requiring operators to modify their player payment processing procedures significantly.
The Swedish government aims to prevent players from accruing significant debt through gambling activities. Regulators across the nation observed an increase in problem gambling, prompting authorities to impose far more stringent payment regulations.
Previously, the law banned operators from offering credit directly to players. However, gamblers found a dangerous workaround by using outside credit cards or external loans to fund their accounts. The new amendment closes this loophole completely by targeting third-party borrowed funds directly. Gambling companies cannot accept bets funded by any form of credit.
Betting platforms must actively block credit card transactions online. Operators need systems that automatically reject borrowed money during deposits. Software developers must create new firewalls to catch these specific transactions. Companies have until spring 2026 to complete the improvements.
Physical betting shops must display clear warning signs explaining the new credit ban. Online platforms must show pop-up notifications to prevent players from using borrowed funds. The Swedish gaming regulator, Spelinspektionen, requires full cooperation from all licensed operators.
The legislation includes limited exceptions. Spelinspektionen might grant special exemptions for specific public benefit games, such as charity lotteries. Municipal registration lotteries do not require a standard operating license and are not affected by this ban.
Consumer safety remains the top priority. By blocking credit cards, Sweden creates a much safer betting environment where players must gamble using only cash they actually possess. Experts believe other European countries may follow Sweden’s lead with similar legislation.
