28 percent rise in overall GAMSTOP registrants during 2021

From 2020 to 2021, GAMSTOP, the free nationwide system for self-exclusion from online gambling, saw a 28 percent rise in registrations. Registrations increased by 25% in the first six months of 2021 compared to the same time in 2020. From July to December 2021, this number increased by 32%, bringing the total number of GAMSTOP registrants to more than 257,000 by the end of the year.

The GAMSTOP yearly review provides a closer look into trends on the free internet gambling self-exclusion system as well as gambling habits in the United Kingdom.  Users join up by providing personal information and selecting a subscription duration of six, twelve, or five years. They are self-excluded from all online gambling sites in the UK after they have completed the process.

GAMSTOP 2021 trends

According to the 2021 review women continue to sign up for GAMSTOP in increasing numbers, accounting for more than 75,000 of the total GAMSTOP registrants and by the end of 2022 the platform will have around 100,000 women registered. Men continue to make up 70% of registrations, while women make up 30%. 43 percent of registrants are between the ages of 25 and 34. The majority of the 257,000 users who have registered with GAMSTOP prefer to preserve their exclusion, with over 235,000 actively barred from online gambling.

GAMSTOP CEO Fiona Palmer commented on the study: “Understanding the profile of GAMSTOP registrants is crucial if we are to continue to ensure that we reach anybody who the GAMSOTP service can help.

Registrations have remained high throughout 2021. While it is hard to gauge how associated this is to the pandemic, what is clear is that self-exclusion is an increasingly important tool for those who wish to remove the temptation of online gambling.

We are very lucky to have many committed partners who work hard to raise awareness of the GAMSTOP service, and I want to place on record our thanks to all of them. We will continue to work hard to ensure that people have access to the tools that are essential to their recovery.”
