After sting operation run by UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) five gambling companies have been found to violate the country’s rules for targeting ads at children, The Guardian reports.
The operation lasted two weeks and during that time authorities have found 20 Youtube channels as well as two dozen children’s websites with gambling ads on them. The ASA isolated five companies for breaking a new law. They were: Vikings Video Slot (NetEnt), Redbet, Multilotto, Unibet and PlayOjo (SkillOnNet), with the Vikings Video Slot being the biggest violator.
The result of this operation is based on two weeks study. It means that ASA has done it before the start of April, when the new rules have come into force. It’s more than likely that this time operators will receive only a warning, with potentially more serious consequences in the future if the situation would continue.
According to The Guardian next step for the ASA is to monitor sites that require signup, like Facebook. We can only guess if authorities will continue with their strategy of creating child ”avatars” and browsing the web in a manner similar to what under-18 person would.
