Norway’s government plans to take another step against foreign gambling websites. This time it will be done by restricting media advertisement.
Plan was presented by Minister of Culture Trine Skei Grande. Norway’s officials want state media authority „Medietilsysnet” to prevent or obstruct access to gambling advertisements. Media outlets, which would not comply, would receive a severe money penalties. Ministry initiated consultations with local media which are supposed to end on June 17th.
Local officials claim move like this would increase protection of more vulnerable players. Idea behind it is based on two reports (published in 2014 and 2017) where it was recommended that Norway needs new measures to stop foreign gambling advertisements.
Norway is one of the countries where gambling is run by state owned monopolies. Officially local players aren’t restricted to use foreign gambling companies though and advertising from foreign operators in the country still can be seen. Norsk Tipping, state monopoly gambling company, has no more than 40% of market share. Rest is split between various international online websites.
