Iowa and Montana are progressing in their goal to become the next two U.S. states with legalised gambling. The Iowa Senate has voted through a bill that would legalise sports betting and daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests in the state. In Montana, there are two bills which recently moved forward in House and Senate.
Bill in Iowa, registered as Senate File 617, was passed by 31 to 18 votes. Now it will be moved to House for more discussion and debate. SF617 goal is to allow in-person, online and mobile sports betting in Iowa. Licence-holders in Iowa would be taxed at a rate of 6.75% of their annual sports wagering net receipts and licence to offer sports betting services in the state would cost $75,000 (€66,500).
In Montana bill to legalise sports betting and lottery is registered as HB725. It was backed by 34 and opposed by 14 senators during voting. Now it will head back to the state House, which passed the bill in March. HB725 expects to make the Montana Lottery the sole sports betting operator in the state. It also plans to allow sports betting to players over the age of 18 and only licensed vendors will be able to permit it.
Montana also has another gambling bill in motion in the legislature. SB330 was approved by the Senate on April 1, then by the House on April 15 and now it’s in the process of making necessary amendments. SB330, known as Montana Sports Betting Act, will set out rules for operators to offer an interactive sports wagering. Licences to offer sports betting would cost $1,000 (€888).
