Social poker games were once among the most popular video game titles in China, particularly when it came to mobile gaming. But under new rules issued by the Chinese government, games that feature poker will no longer be approved for sale in the country.
The new rules, which were announced earlier this month and came into effect on Monday, come into play alongside existing regulations that ban pornography. Three genres of games will no longer be allowed and won’t get approval from regulators at the State Administration of Press and Publications.,
It includes gambling titles such as Mahjong (a tile-based game that was developed in China during the Qing dynasty) and Poker, games that deal with the country’s imperial history, and games featuring corpses and blood—of any colour. No more changing the colour of blood to green and hoping it helps.
According to video game researcher Niko Partners, 37 perсent of the 8,561 games approved in 2017 were poker and mahjong titles.
