In 2012, the law company Tolkien Estate and the publisher of the books HarperCollins filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros., claiming that the company broke the contract, promoting online gambling, slots and other online gambling products based on Tolkien’s books.
In response, Warner Bros. filed a counterclaim, claiming that giving up the contract in 1969 forced the studio to lose millions to licensing the Hobbit and reducing the impact on Jackson’s films. In addition, the company said that digital operation was within its rights.
Last week, the five-year conflict between the companies was over. The lawyers of both parties did not give detailed information about their agreement and settlement of the issue, but issued a joint statement, which refers to the termination of a long-term lawsuit.
