Italy will ban advertising gambling

From January 1, 2019 a full ban on gambling advertising is set to take effect in Italy, even though the decree still needs to be ratified by the Parliament.

The ban will affect all products and services related to gambling, on all media platforms, including television, websites, radio. Sports clubs will also be prohibited from representing sponsors from the gambling industry. The ban does not apply to the state national lottery or its products.

Italy has become the first European country to completely ban gambling advertising. Minister Di Maio has previously said that if the Council of Ministers approved his measure and if the ban took effect, he would use his influence to lobby for the introduction of heavier gambling advertising restrictions across the European Union.

As a result of this law, sports clubs, as well as gambling companies, may suffer considerably. Almost all the top-clubs have sponsorship agreements with the sector representatives.
