Colombia approves Meridian Gaming as 15-th online operator

Colombian gambling regulator Coljuegos has issued its latest online sports betting licence to a local subsidiary of Meridian Gaming.

The license guarantees Meridian Gaming’s operations to Colombia for the first time, having established a retail and online presence in Europe through licenses in Malta, the UK and Spain. Coljuegos said that since the country launched its regulated online gaming market in 2016, the sector has contributed more than COP19.6bn (€5.6m) to subsidize healthcare in Colombia.

Meridian based in Malta and operates both B2C and B2B operations in Europe and began expanding into South America, Africa and Asia a few years ago. In addition to online operations, Meridian also runs over 600 retail betting points of sale across the globe via its Bet Shop Manager product.

Colombia became the first South American jurisdiction to formally authorize online gambling in late-2016, and issued its first official online license the following June. To date, Coljuegos says Colombians have opened 1,267,018 accounts with its online licensees, up from just 977k in July.
