Australian authorities tightened existing laws

The Australian Federal Government has adopted new regulations, according to which players who use sites for illegal betting on horseracing will face severe penalties, including the removal of telephones or computers.

The new acts were adopted after Racing Australia, the body that controls the horse racing industry in Australia, said that illegal gambling platforms earn profits of hundreds of millions of Australian dollars.

Racing Australia executive director Barry O’Farrell, commented: “It is necessary to prohibit bidders from making bets with illegal offshore operators, because this is a significant risk for the industry. Stewards do not see who makes bets with them, and therefore cannot get bookmaker records of customers. This limits the ability of anti-corruption agencies that are engaged in horse racing, request information and conduct investigations related to these issues”.
