Bangkok police arrested 4,700 people during the World Cup

During the World Cup-2018 a massive illegal bookmaking activity took place in Thailand, in which 4,700 people were involved. They were all arrested by the police and seized 200,000 baht (6,000 dollars) in cash.

Police confiscated betting slips showing cash flow of almost 1.4 million baht and ordered a freeze of 147 bank accounts with deposits of 35 million baht for further examination by the Anti-Money Laundering Office.

Most forms of wagering are illegal in Thailand, as the state only permits gambling via the state sponsored Thai Lottery and horseracing, but the wagers have to be placed on Thai land.
