The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) is set to vote on a comprehensive ban that would prohibit all football staff from betting. The proposal comes ahead of the union plenary meeting scheduled for March 20 in Sofia.
“The updated framework represents a significant strengthening of our integrity measures,” noted BFU leadership. The ban would apply to everyone involved in Bulgarian football, from players and coaches to administrative personnel.
The proposed regulations update the BFU 2018 integrity framework. BFU General Director Andrey Petrov and BFU President Georgi Ivanov are championing the measure as essential for protecting the sport integrity.
The move follows similar actions by football governing bodies worldwide. By prohibiting all wagering activity among staff, the BFU aims to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest and reduce match-fixing risks.
If approved at the March 20 meeting, the ban would take effect immediately across all levels of Bulgarian football. The Bulgarian Football Union has not yet specified penalties for betting violations, though industry standards typically include fines and suspension.
This regulatory development highlights the increasing scrutiny on sports betting relationships within professional football across Europe.
