According to the latest surveys, women overtaken men and now consists of a majority of Swedes with a gambling addiction. Local experts attribute it to the rising popularity of online gambling.
It’s a surprising development as just for years ago women were accounted only for 18% of gamblers with a problem severe enough to be considered a gambling addiction. Now, this number has risen to a staggering 64%.
According to Ulla Romild, the investigator behind the report, slightly over 100,000 people are in a ”gambling addiction” group. 225,000 people more have some risk of becoming problem gamblers. The former group is just under 1.5% of Sweden population and the latter, where there is an even split between men and women, it’s around 3%.
The survey of 5,000 people found that men play significantly more poker and bet more on sports and horse racing than women. But that gap narrowed or vanished entirely when it came to playing the lottery, slot machines, or bingo.
It’s also worth mentioning that The Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s local gambling regulator, has recently revealed that registry of self-excluded people has reached 30,000 users. spelpaus.se was created on January 1, 2019, and saves the names of people who desire to exclude from the new regulated online gambling market.
