Swedish regulator to investigate bets on underage footballers

Spelinspektionen, the Swedish gambling regulator, has issued warnings to a number of operators that were found to have offered certain betting options on a football match featuring players under the age of 18.

The regulator said that several operators offered bets on the Allsvenska (top-tier men’s football division in Sweden) match in late April between AIK and IFK Gothenburg, including specific bets on individual football players who were under 18. IFK has won a match 3:0.

Swedish law strictly prohibits the wagering of bets on matches featuring players or athletes who are not yet of a legal gambling age – which is currently 18.

“The regulations aim to protect the integrity of youth sports and is of importance to prevent people under the age of 18 being those looking to manipulate games, so-called match fixing,” Spelinspektionen said.

“Spelinspektionen is very serious about such [offences] and has therefore initiated supervision of several companies regarding betting on players under the age of 18.”

Spelinspektionen is keeping itself very busy since the beginning of 2019, after in both March and April took action against operators who allowed self-excluded players to continue wagering. They’ve also had to warn operators who were offering one too many bonuses to cut it out.
