MGM Springfield fined $100k for multiple underage violations

Casino operator MGM Resorts has been fined $100k (€89.4k) for falling short in its efforts to keep people under 21 from gambling or drinking alcohol.

On Thursday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) announced imposing a $100k “civil administrative penalty” on the MGM Springfield casino for multiple instances in which individuals under 21 years of age were able to gain access to the casino’s gaming floor and consume alcohol.

According to investigators, the underage violations started last August and amounted for 22 incidents over the next three months. A further eight incidents occurred in a 10-day span starting in late November, followed by 14 more incidents between last December and late April.

MGM announced that they are trying to address the problem but won’t be contesting the fine.

“To me, it’s a signal – it’s a signal to me, personally, a signal to the company, and to our staff, that our regulators are taking this very seriously, and that we have to continue to strive for 100 per cent compliance — zero incidents,” said casino president Mike Mathis.
