Bookmaker Paddy Power has expanded its ‘Save Our Shirt’ football sponsorship campaign by signing up English League One club Southend United and League Two team Macclesfield Town.
Both these clubs join Huddersfield Town, Newport County and Motherwell F.C. in being ‘unsponsored’ by the Irish bookmaker. Paddy Power will sponsor them during for the 2019-20 season, but will forgo its front-of-shirt branding exposure in line with its new campaign.
Former English National Team defender and current Macclesfield Town first-team manager Sol Campbell commented: “We’re delighted to have Paddy Power saving our shirt”.
“The club saw their campaign and were really keen to be a part of it and we wanted to return our kit back to our fans. We’re pleased to have Paddy Power un-sponsoring us, and we look forward to the season ahead,” added Campbell.
Launched through a partnership with English Championship club Huddersfield Town, ‘Save Our Shirt’ sees Paddy Power call for betting operators to stop striking shirt sponsorship deals with football clubs.
“Macclesfield saw the success of the Save Our Shirt campaign and felt they as club are a perfect fit for the initiative,” explained a spokesman from Paddy Power.
The announcement should bring positive publicity to Southend United after the club has faced criticism because of shedding Prostate Cancer UK and the Amy May Trust, both of which had promoted themselves for free on its shirts for the past two seasons.
