GVC’s bwin fined by Dutch regulator

Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has imposed a €350,000 fine on London-listed operator GVC Holdings for illegally targeting Dutch customers without a license.

The fine has been issued to GVC subsidiary ElectraWorks after an investigation by the KSA found that the company was illegally offering online casino and sports betting services via its bwin.com website in the country.

The KSA’s statement says that Bwin.com offered online games of chance and “a large selection of sports bets” to Dutch punters “at least for a certain period of time” in violation of local rules. The KSA also said the website specifically targeted consumers in the country by offering Dutch-focused payment method iDEAL and failed to geo-block Dutch customers.

Online gaming is currently illegal in the Netherlands, although the country is in the process of preparing to launch a regulated market on January 1, 2021, after the Dutch Senate passed the Netherlands’ Remote Gambling Act earlier this year.

The KSA has been clamping down on illegal gaming and related activities as part of its preparations for launching a regulated market. In recent months Casumo, Mansion Group’s Casino.com, 1xBet, William Hill and MRG were among those to have been sanctioned by the Dutch regulator.
