Sportradar denies Italian media allegations

Betting technology and sports data provider Sportradar released a strongly worded statement refuting a ‘Business Insider Italia’ story that made a series of serious allegations about the sports data company.

The newspaper has published an article in which it is alleged that Fabio Lanzafame, a big player in illegal gambling in the country between 2015 and 2017, when business was divided between three mafia organisations, had paid cash to use Sportradar and its subsidiary Betradar’s services.

The allegations against the sports betting technology provider surfaced in relation to the ongoing Galassia investigations in Italy. Last year, Italian authorities launched a massive crackdown, freezing around €1 billion of assets, on several illegal betting operations that were believed to be conducted by obscure Malta- and Curacao-based companies which, in turn, were allegedly run by the Italian mafia.

In its statement, Sportradar noted that the recent article contained inaccurate information and misrepresented its work both in the Italian and the global gambling markets.

“The article in question is wholly inaccurate and misrepresents our work both in Italy and globally. Sportradar completely rejects its content and the allegations made and may be taking appropriate legal action to protect its business and reputation,” stated the newspaper.

Sportradar is the main data distributor of Italy’s Serie A, B, C, and D football leagues. However, according to Business Insider Italia, the company was also providing a range of its services to illegal gambling operators that reportedly handled annual turnover of around €4 billion.

The company has also been pursuing expansion opportunities in the lucrative US sports betting market, where has become an official partner of all four major leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL.
