Svenska Spel donated SEK50m for grassroots sports

Swedish gambling operator Svenska Spel has donated more than SEK50m (€4.7m) to grassroots sports in the country for the seventh consecutive year as part of its Gräsroten initiative.

The donation marks the seventh consecutive year that the gambling operator has supported grassroots sports across the country.

Funding was distributed to a total of 8,556 associations across 71 sports, with more than half of this (SEK29.9m) going to football. Ice hockey followed with SEK5.8m, and then floorball with SEK2.2m.

Among football teams, Hammarby IF receives the highest level of donations, having received SEK 1.6m to date. They are closely followed by Allsvenskan side Djurgårdens IF FF which has received SEK1.3m and AIK FF with SEK1.25m.

Among regions, Stockholm, the Swedish capital, receives the most funding, receiving SEK10.2m as part of the scheme. Västra Götaland ranked second with SEK9.3m, then Skåne on SEK8.3m.

“We at Svenska Spel always look forward to this time of year, when we, through the Gräsroten, distribute more than SEK 50 million to youth sports. Enabling more children and young people to become part of the Swedish sports family and get moving is incredibly important. Grass root sports is one of the initiatives we strive to support,” commented Patrik Hofbauer, CEO of Svenska Spel.

Money was distributed to projects and initiatives based on votes cast by Svenska Spel customers. Players were asked to choose their three favourite associations, with the most popular choices receiving more funding. The money is predominantly used for purchasing training materials, trophies, leadership training, and daily activities.
