India’s Rajasthan state to ban online gambling and betting

The Land of Kings as literally Rajasthan is translated, the northwestern and largest India state by area, covering 10.5% of the total country area with a population of 65 million, is reportedly going to ban online gambling and betting. The state government will bring a bill in the ongoing assembly session to make online gambling a cognisable offence and introduce strict penal provisions including a jail term and steep fines.

Among 36 of India’s states, Rajasthan has the seventh-largest state economy in India with $140 billion in gross domestic product and a per capita GDP US$1,700. Rajasthan ranks 29th among Indian states in human development index.

Considering online gambling and betting to be a social evil, the government has given its approval to amend the Rajasthan Public Gambling Ordinance 1949. The Rajasthan Public Gambling (Prevention) Bill 2021 has strict provisions to stop online gambling and betting. Those who run gambling dens and those who gamble are also being brought within the ambit of the new law. The bill will be tabled in the house soon.
