Credit Card Deposit Ban Sweep US iGaming

BetMGM has confirmed it will ban credit card deposit for US players starting March 31, affecting both sports betting and online casino funding. The policy change, announced during a Pennsylvania regulatory hearing, will block existing credit cards and reject new card registrations across all licensed markets.

This decision aligns BetMGM with DraftKings and FanDuel, which have already implemented nationwide credit card deposit bans. DraftKings introduced its policy last August after facing a $450,000 fine from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for accepting credit card deposits, even when transactions originated outside the state. FanDuel followed in March, maintaining its Canadian operations while enforcing the ban in the US.

State-level restrictions are also tightening. Massachusetts, Iowa, Illinois, Oregon, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Vermont have already prohibited credit card deposits for online gambling. Legislative efforts in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland aim to enforce similar bans, with Maryland’s House passing its measure unanimously on March 18. Virginia and Maine have recently approved bills to block credit card payments for sports betting and online casino play, awaiting gubernatorial approval.

The ban follows a $100,000 fine imposed on BetMGM by Pennsylvania regulators for inadequate identity verification. Investigators found fraud rings bypassing safeguards, creating fake accounts with stolen personal details and compromised payment devices. These schemes generated over $2 million in unlawful betting, highlighting systemic vulnerabilities in BetMGM‘s controls.
