Djokovic Tests Positive For Coronavirus After Ignoring Social Distancing Rules

Novak Djokovic is the latest tennis player to test positive for Covid-19, shortly after Viktor Troicki, Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric all revealed that they had the virus after having played the Djokovic Adria Tour competition.

Djokovic, the 33-year old tennis number one, had played Troicki in the first game of the competition in Belgrade, who is also Serbian.

After Djokovic and his wife contacted Coronavirus, the competition has since been cancelled, as confirmed by Djordje, Djokovic’s brother.

Djordje stated “unfortunately, due to all the events that happened in the last few days, we have decided that the most important thing right now is to stabilise the epidemiological situation, as well as for everyone to recover.”

It is known that Djokovic had been ignoring social distancing measures by shaking hands and hugging with fellow players. The anti-vaxxer appeared to ignore the severity of the situation, to which Andy Murray claimed the positive test results were “a lesson for us”.

The first leg attracted thousands of fans, and the players were later pictured dancing together in a Belgrade nightclub. This is claimed to be the negligence that led to Djokovic contracting the virus.

Outspoken Tennis Player Nick Kyrgios claimed that the event going ahead in the first place was a “bone-headed decision”.

ATP events have been cancelled since February due to the pandemic, and it appears although this non-ATP tour event had got started again prematurely. The US Open however in August is set to go ahead, which will delight both tennis addicts and avid betters as there will be more opportunities for live sports betting.

Croatia also has relaxed social distancing, meaning that players were not obliged to take extra precautions like they would have in many other European nations now.

Cilic, Andrey Rublev and Zverev all tested negative for Coronavirus, but have to nevertheless self-isolate for 14 days due to the many positive results around them.

Battle Of The Brits

Schroders Battle Of The Brits also went ahead in the UK, which was live on Amazon Prime, and featured Andy Murray. Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski suffered a shock defeat to Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady in the opening game of the event.

In order to reduce the risk of Coronavirus contraction, there were no ball kids or line judges. Players did not change ends and retrieved the balls themselves.

After beating Andy’s brother Jamie, Broady spoke of Andy as a player. “He’s a fantastic player, a fantastic champion. He’s moving really well at the moment, he’s telling people he’s not. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll save the trash talk for off camera.”

Jack Draper, 18, was forced to pull out of the tournament with an abdominal injury. The 18 year old had been the runner up in Wimbledon 18 Juniors. He was replaced by 24 year old Ryan Peniston (singles) and James Ward (doubles).

The tournament is designed to give the elites of British mens’ tennis some competitive practice before their professional tour in August. The tournament is also raising money for NHS Charities Together.
