The Dutch gambling authority Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has issued clear guidelines regarding its influencer marketing ban, officially adding influencers, streamers, and online personalities with significant visibility to the list of restricted role models.
The ban was first introduced in 2022 as part of wider reforms to the Remote Gaming Act, designed to protect vulnerable groups including minors and young adults. While professional sports players were clearly identified as role models, the KSA has now confirmed that online personalities with large enough followings to attract marketers also fall under the restrictions.
Recent enforcement actions demonstrate the KSA’s commitment to the rules. JOI Gaming was forced to pay €400,000 over unlawful online product placement. In another notable case, BetMGM featured then-17-year-old footballer Lamine Yamal in one of its adverts, drawing regulatory attention. With a new Dutch government now in place, regulations are expected to tighten further.
