GAMSTOP records more than 7,000 new registrations per month in 2022

GAMSTOP, the free, independent national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling, has registered in 2022 more than 300,000 people in the UK, with an average of more than 7,000 new signups per month.

According to GAMSTOP’s latest data release for the first six months of 2022, while the White Paper on reforming the gambling laws is now expected to be published in the fall. More than 43,500 people signed up to exclude themselves from UK-licensed gambling sites in the first six months of 2022, an increase of 9% over the same period in 2021.

There were more signups in the second quarter of 2022 than in the final quarter of 2021, which is typical for the winter months. According to our GAMSTOP’s data, 371 people signed up to exclude themselves on July 1st, the highest number of people signing up in a single day since the service launched in April 2018.

GAMSTOP CEO, Fiona Palmer said:  “Our most recent data suggests gambling-related harm remains a serious problem and it is widely accepted that action is needed to protect those most at risk. We are now recording an average of more than 7,000 new registrants each month, which is almost a double-digit increase year-on-year.

Although we cannot be certain about the reasons for this, our internal analysis implies that higher volumes of self-exclusion are evidence of a sustained prevalence of gambling-related harm, as well as a greater awareness of GAMSTOP.

We look forward to seeing the Government’s recommendations for reforming the gambling laws in the forthcoming White Paper, now expected this autumn”.

In the second quarter of 2022 GAMSTOP registrations from 16-24-year-olds increased by 5%, and by the end of June, 58% of all registrants were under the age of 35. Currently, women make up 30% of registrants, but by February 2022, 33% of those who self-excluded were females, setting a new record.

It’s free to sign up for GAMSTOP, but you will be asked to provide some basic information and to select a time period of exclusion of six months, one year, or five years. Nearly half of those registered as of June 2022 have chosen to put in place a five-year exclusion, which is the longest term that can be granted.

As of June 2022, 91 percent of the 300,631 people who have signed up for GAMSTOP since its inception have been expelled. In June 2022, fewer exclusions were removed than in any of the five months prior.

GAMSTOP and its technology partner The Data Shed won the ‘Data for Good Initiative’ award at this year’s British Data Awards in May 2022 in recognition of their ability to use data safely to protect individuals who may be vulnerable.
