Till now it has been illegal to gamble on casino games and poker in the majority of German federal states, in which online casino providers where outlawed. The ongoing discussion on the issue found 16 federal states agreeing to a new treaty which will allow operators to offer online casino and poker across the country!
Online casino and poker are likely to be regulated in July 2021. In the meantime, a new national regulatory authority on gambling was announced, which will introduce over the coming months a new model in Germany’s iGaming industry of casino games, slots and poker.
The new national regulatory authority of Germany will introduce strict safeguarding laws against underage gambling and ensure protection for vulnerable people against addiction. The new regulatory authority will be nation-wide, but it will also provide freedom for each state to develop its own agenda for online casino providers.
German ministerial official Dirk Schrodter commented: “States will formulate and enforce regulatory and technical requirements. The new legislation will be the basis for a sufficiently attractive online gambling offering, to ensure the channeling of gambling into the legal market”.
Although the full details of the new regulatory body and what it will include are not yet finalized, it is expected that it will outline restrictions such as a blackout window of closure each day, time delays between accessing certain casino and betting providers and a watershed time period whereby TV commercials will not be allowed.
