Philippines immigration operatives have done a surprise raid on a Bureau of Immigration (BI) jail in Taguig to stop illegal online operators running their business from there. Looks like they found what they were looking too.
After two months of surveillance of the facility investigators found previously arrested several Chinese nationals to continue running secret online gambling operations directly from behind the bars. They were in possession of almost $2,500 in cash and were using laptops, computer monitors, routers and cellphones to run their business.
Local police also used K9 units to search for illegal drugs but found none of them. BI officials will be looking now into how prisoners were able to smuggle in so many illegal items and will try to find guards responsible for this to happen.
The above example confirms the problem of undocumented Chinese workers in the Philippines’ online gambling industry. A recent report indicated that over 50,000 Chinese works in this industry and many of them are suspected to evading their taxes.
It’s unclear though how dedicated local government will be to fix this issue due to fear of retaliation from their Chinese counterparts.
