Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur, has ended its partnership with the Russian gambling company 1xbet. The announcement comes shortly after the operator’s website was suspended by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC).
Chelsea and Liverpool, two other clubs with sponsorship deals with the company, have decided to suspend all advertising with a controversial global betting partner, but so far didn’t go as far as a North London club and did not announce terminating their agreement.
All three Premier League powerhouses were recently contacted by UKGC representatives and informed that they risk being prosecuted under the Gambling Act for unlawful advertising if they continued to use 1xBET logos and promotions because the firm has had their licence suspended in the UK.
Last August, Tottenham and 1xBet announced a long-term agreement, making the operator the football club’s Official Betting Partner for Africa. In addition, Liverpool and Chelsea announced in July that they have signed similar multi-year sponsorship agreements with 1xBet, under the terms of which it became their official global partner.
The Russian gambling company operated in the UK as a white-label partner of gaming and betting technology and platform provider FSB Technology (UK). 1xBet’s UK-facing website was suspended in August, and the UKGC is currently investigating both the gambling operator and its provider. The company troubles in the UK were prompted by a ‘Sunday Times’ investigation that detailed the operator’s questionable advertising practices.Follow us on
