The outbreak of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) gradually effects professional sports all over the world. While in Italy all sport is suspended and the country is in lockdown, the Spanish La Liga and Netherlands Eredivisie have been suspended for the next two matchdays, the US professional basketball and football leagues, the NBA and the MLS, were also suspended!
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has suspended the 2019-20 season indefinitely after a Utah Jazz player tested positive for the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). The league announced the suspension just before the Jazz were set to tip off against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The same time, North America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) has suspended all of its games for the next 30 days due to ongoing concerns about the outbreak of novel coronavirus (Covid-19). The United States Soccer Federation, meanwhile, has called off all men’s and women’s national team matches scheduled in March and April. The 2020 MLS season only kicked off on February 29, but the campaign will now be halted with immediate effect as the league continues to assess the impact of novel coronavirus.
The Portuguese football chiefs had announced games would be played behind closed doors before announcing a full suspension, for an indefinite period, just a few hours later. The same measures will follow for other leagues as well!
