Svenska Spel accused of violating Sweden’s gambling rules

Svenska Spel, the state-run former gambling monopoly, has been reported to the Swedish Broadcasting Commission, for allegedly breaching new laws in relation to gambling advertising standards.

The Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling, Branschforeningen for Onlinespel (BOS), has reported Svenska Spel to the Swedish Broadcasting Commission stating its failure to provide responsible gambling information in relation to its Triss, Keno and Lotto advertising schedule. BOS represents more than 20 international online gambling operators and content suppliers that have been authorized to operate in Sweden.

The trade association suggested that Svenska Spel has been aggressively promoting its Triss, Keno, and Lotto games on commercial TV channels as “a natural part” of morning and family programs. A morning show on channel TV4 includes a regular spot in which guests are invited to play Svenska Spel lottery products, including scratch cards.

BOS General Secretary Gustaf Hoffstedt pointed out in Monday’s statement that the lack of such clear messages violates Sweden’s newly enforced gambling law.

“The products of Triss, Keno and Lotto are aggressively marketed in commercial TV channels as a natural part of the program schedule in the morning sofas and family programs without any connection to gaming responsibility information,” states Hoffstedt.

This is the second complaint BOS has filed against Svenska Spel since the launch of Sweden’s new regulated market on January 1. BOS previously filed a complaint against Svenska Spel regarding marketing its new online casino products to its land-based customer database, exploit unavailable to the market’s new international licensees.
