Super League, Europe’s top professional rugby league organisation, has signed “the biggest commercial deal in its history” with betting company Betfred.
As part of the extension, Betfred will continue as the lead sponsor of the Super League until the end of season 2021, extending a partnership it has maintained since 2017.
The deal, worth what is understood to be more than UK£1m (€1.13m) annually, is an improvement on the previous contract signed in 2016, which was worth as much as UK£900k (€1.01m) a year.
Confirming their agreement to the new terms of the “multi-million-pound deal”, Betfred marketing has emphasised that it will continue in its support of the Super League social and grassroots initiatives, maintaining its continuation of charitable donations as part of its ‘Betfred Super League Man of the Match’ awards.
News of the deal comes in the wake of a new record attendance for a Super League fixture last week when 31,555 people watched the Catalans Dragons overcome Wigan Warriors at the Nou Camp in Barcelona.
