New sports betting company Virgin Bet launches in Gibraltar

Gamesys Group-owned Virgin Bet has announced its launch in Gibraltar, just a fortnight after Bet365’s exit plan to Malta was revealed.

The local government has already congratulated the firm on its successful application for a new gambling licence and subsequent launch in the UK market this week where the company has a partnership with sports betting supplier SBTech.

“We maintain that Gibraltar is a leading jurisdiction from which to operate a remote gambling business. A large number of existing operators, despite Brexit challenges, continue to maintain faith in the jurisdiction,” said Minister for Commerce Albert Isola.

The praise follows on from the recent news that amid Brexit concerns, Bet365 is reported to have sanctioned a €70 million relocation project to migrate its staff to Malta.

“We’re excited to launch Virgin Bet into the world’s most competitive sportsbook market, and we feel that Gibraltar is the perfect location for us to base our operations,” added Simon Mizzi, Gamesys’ Gibraltar Marketing Director.

The Gamesys Group, which has an office of 50 people in Gibraltar, takes its name from the Virgin Group founded by Sir Richard Branson, which also sold Virgin Games to Gamesys in 2013.
