Switzerland’s first four online casinos could be launched in July, a year after Swiss voters backed the nation’s new gambling law.
This week, Swiss media reported that the Federal Gaming Board (ESBK) had received casino license applications from four of the country’s land-based casino operators: Grand Casino Baden AG, Grand Casino Davos AG, Grand Casino Lucerne and Casino Zürichsee AG.
The new gambling law approved in a national referendum last summer by 73% per cent of voters, allows the country’s land-based casinos to launch igaming offerings, but blocks foreign operators from entering the market. Swiss-licensed online operators will be given a six-year exclusivity window in which to build strong relationships with local gamblers.
The final decision on whether the aforementioned casinos should be allowed to proceed with the launch of their digital operations will be made by the Swiss National Council at the end of June. If the decision will be positive, casinos will be able to go live with online gambling as early as July 1.
