According to various press reports the recent restrictions on gambling advertising in Spain will cost 80 million euros to football clubs and the La Liga organisation which has also a sponsorship deal with Sportium, a gambling company. The biggest hit will be on the eight La Liga clubs, which have a shirt sponsorship with companies from the gambling sector:
Alaves – Betway (Malta)
Granada – Winamax (France)
Levante – Betway (Malta)
Leganes – Betway (Malta)
Mallorca – Betfred (Gibraltar)
Osasuna – Kirolbet (Spain)
Sevilla – Marathon Bet (UK)
Valencia – Bwin (Gibraltar)
Some studies show that clubs will see their sponsorship income reduced by 30%, while it should be noted that 41 out of the 42 clubs in the first and second division have at least one partnership with a betting company! As things stand, only Real Sociedad have completely rejected the money from betting companies, but even they will feel some effects because LaLiga as a whole will be impacted given that so many of the TV adverts surrounding football broadcasts come from this sector.
Following recent tax rises, difficult negotiations with TV operators and the impact of the coronavirus, this is yet another financial blow for Spanish clubs.
