A new trade association dubbed ‘Responsible Affiliates in Gambling’ (RAIG) has been formed in recognition of the roles and responsibilities of affiliate marketing firms and service providers to ensure that they comply with the necessary standards of consumer protections.
The association will initially comprise three major players in the UK gambling affiliate sector, the Racing Post, Oddschecker and Better Collective. However, Monday’s announcement is considered to be a part of wider industry initiatives plans to “promote the socially responsible marketing of gambling products”. RAIG has plans to expand by adding other similar UK companies that have the same business philosophy.
As a condition of membership, each member will be subject to an annual social responsibility audit which will be conducted by Gambling Integrity (www.gamblingintegrity.com), to ensure that the affiliate publishers are compliant with a range of existing statutory and non-statutory regulations including:
– The UK Code of non-broadcast Advertising and Direct and Promotional Marketing (the ‘CAP’ code)
– The UK Code of Broadcast Advertising (‘BCAP’ code)
– The Gambling Industry Code for Socially Responsible Advertising
– Any relevant guidance issued by regulators such as the Advertising Standards Authority; Gambling Commission; and Information Commissioners’ Office on affiliate marketing requirements.
The trade group formation comes just months following the publication of a BBC News study showing that the number of child gamblers has quadrupled in the UK since 2016, and only a few weeks after land-based betting shops were forced to comply with new FOBT (Fixed Odds Betting Terminals) maximum wager restrictions from £100 to £2.Follow us on
